Seri Saujana Bridge

This bridge is the link between the Core Island (Presint 4) and Presint 7. Seri Saujana Bridge is strategically located at the main entrance into the Core Island from the south via the upgraded B15 road and KL-KLIA highway.

It is a new concept of the cable stayed Arch bridge. The bridge is controlled by the principal design parameters to reflect a transparent elegant and futuristic slender looking structure, with an overall single span of 300m and total width of 32m. There are dual three lane carriageways. The deck level varies from RL 35.25m at abutment to RL 35m at centre of the bridge.

It is a new concept of the cable-stayed arch bridge. The bridge is controlled by the principal design parameters to reflect a transparent, elegant and futuristic slender looking structure, with an overall single span of 300m and total width of 32m. There are dual three lane carriageways. The deck level varies from RL 35.25m at abutment to RL 35m at centre of the bridge.

The builder of this bridge was Road Builder (M) Sdn Bhd at a cost of USD20 million. It was completed on 31st May 2003.

Seri Bakti Bridge

The Seri Bakti is one of the main bridges spanning the protocol route. The bridge links the secondary road to the Deputy Prime Minister's Residence, connecting the Government Presint in the north to Presint 16 in the south.

The concept design was developed from several shorter span, with a precast pretension "Super-T" beam slab deck with spans up to 35m. The total structure length is 270m. There are dual two lane carriageways, 2m median, walkway and cycle track.

Seri Bakti Bridge is a 370 metre link in Precinct 1, the Government Precinct. It connects the Government offices to the Deputy Prime Minister's Residence. Seri Bakti Bridge consists of nine spans. Unlike the other bridges in Putrajaya, the Seri Bakti takes a more minimal approach to its design, which carries elements of Islamic architecture. At each pier is a pavilion. The rails and lamp post matches the architecture of the promenade of the bridge.

Seri Setia Bridge

This bridge is the link between Presint 4 on the Core Island and Presint 19 . Its location at the south-eastern end of the Persiaran Perdana makes it a landmark and the main route to the core island from the south-east.

The bridge design consist of seven spans of 30m between pier centrelines. It is dual three lane carriageways of total 10.5m width each and 0.5m width of marginal strip. The median width is 3m and walkway with cycle track. The following features of the bridge help embellish its beauty:

* Railing with architectural features

* Illumination with decorative lighting

Seri Bestari Bridge

Seri Bestari Bridge, also known as Jambatan Seri Bestari, is a large bridge in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The eastern end of the bridge starts in Precinct 16 and the western end starts near Wisma Putra on Core Island.

The bridge has a total length of 152.6 meters with a main span of 60 meters.

The bridge spans the lake and the promenades, connecting Presint 16 at the eastern side and Wisma Putra on the Core Island side.

It is a continuous structure where the piers are supported monolithically to the pilecaps. The main span is 60m long and two adjacent spans 35m each together with two 11.3m approaches make the total structure length of 152.6m. There are dual two lane carriageways, 3m median, walkway and cycle track.

Seri Gemilang Bridge

The main link between the Core Island (Presint 4) and Presint 5, this bridge is located at the southern end of the Persiaran Perdana. Categorised as a ceremonial bridge, the Seri Gemilang will be a landmark in Putrajaya serving as the main entrance to the Core Island from the south for motorists and pedestrians.

The bridge is made at a main span of 120m long and two spans 60m at each end making a total length of 240m. There are dual three lane carriageways of total 10.5m each comprising of 3 x 3.5m width for the lanes. The deck level varies from RL 34m at abutment to RL 36.75m at centre of the bridge.

The special features of the bridge include:

Seri Wawasan Bridge

The Seri Wawasan Bridge is one of the main bridges in Putrajaya, the Malaysian federal administrative capital. This futuristic cable-stayed bridge which has a sail ship appearance, connects Precinct 2 on the Core Island to the residential area of Precinct 8.

The concrete bridge is a combination of cable backstays and structural steel tie back. It is a dual three lane carriageways of 18.6m width each, comprising 3 x 3.5m width lanes, 0.5 m hard shoulder, 0.5m marginal strip. The median is 4 m wide and walkway cum cycle track width is 5.1m giving a total width of 37.2m at the centre of the bridge.

Seri Perdana Bridge

Seri Perdana Bridge is a 370m long bridge which is built across the Putrajaya Lake in Putrajaya, Malaysia's federal administrative centre.

It is based on royal Islamic architectural design. This bridge contains eight unique balconies / rest areas for visitors to enjoy the panoramic sights of the surrounding lake area.

The bridge is made up of seven central spans of 75m and two end spans of 55m. There are two separate carriageways over two twin cell box girder. In the cross section, the overall width between extreme ends of two box girder is 23m. The foot path is flanked by railing and the road's median is lined by decorative street-lighting.

Putra Bridge

Putra Bridge is the main bridge in Putrajaya, Malaysia. It is analogous to Khaju Bridge in Esfahan, Iran. With a span of 435 metres, this bridge connects the Government Precinct to the Mixed Development Precinct and links Putra Square with the Boulevard.

The upper level of the bridge forms part of the Boulevard. This huge three-deck bridge provides vehicle, monorail and pedestrian access. Besides providing the link between Precinct 1 and Precinct 2 on the Core Island, it has been designed to be a special feature of Putrajaya. The piers also accommodate fine dining restaurants within its main pillar supports.

Alamanda Putrajaya is the first shopping centre built in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The Alamanda Putrajaya mall, located in Precinct 1, costs about RM 380 million (USD 100 million) to build and was first opened at the end of August 2004. With the signing of Carrefour as the anchor tenant and along with the potential 180 tenants, Alamanda catalysed commercial activities for Putrajaya and create numerous job opportunities.

The other anchors that located here include Parkson, Cold Storage and Golden Screen Cinemas.

Putrajaya Lake

Putrajaya Lake is located at the centre of Putrajaya city, Malaysia. This 650ha man-made lake is designed to act as a natural cooling system for the city and also for recreation, fishing, water sports and water transport.

On September 26, 2004 the F1 Powerboat Championship was held on this lake for the first time (third time hosted by Malaysia).

In 2005 Putrajaya hosted the Asian Canoeing Championships.

The lake is at the southern part of the wetland. About 60% of the lake water flow from the wetland and the remaining 40% is the direct discharge from bordering promenade. The 20 m width promenade is the buffer feature along the lake shorelines. The water surface area of the whole lake is about 400 hectares. The total volume of the whole lake water is about 23.5 million cubic meters and the water depth is in the range of 3 to 14 meters. The lake has been planned to cater for multi-functional uses, including recreation, fishing, water sports and water transport. The lake and its foreshores also form Putrajaya's most popular resource for informal recreation as a waterfront city.

Darul Ehsan Palace (Malay: Istana Darul Ehsan), which is located in Putrajaya, Malaysia, is one of the royal residences of the Sultan of Selangor (Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah).

Istana Darul Ehsan is the weekend palace of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. It is located in Precinct 8 of Putrajaya. Construction began when Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, the then Sultan of Selangor, reigned at the 11th Yang Di-Pertuan Agung, the king of Malaysia, in 1999. When His Majesty passed away in 2001, the palace was still incomplete.

The Tudor-style Istana Darul Ehsan is grey in colour, with dark blue roofing. The grand entrance door leads to a semi-circular lobby.

Wisma Putra

Wisma Putra is another name for the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is also the name of the RM170 million Ministry of Foreign Affairs complex located at the country’s administrative capital, Putrajaya.

The name Wisma Putra was given to the original Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Jalan Wisma Putra, Kuala Lumpur back in 1966. The entire Ministry moved to Putrajaya on 17 September 2001. The name "Putra" was given in honour of Malaysia’s father of independence, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, whose official residence as Chief Minister of the Federation of Malaya was on the same spot.

When the Ministry eventually moved to a bigger complex in Putrajaya, it carried the name Wisma Putra to Putrajaya.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs is Anifah Aman. His office is in Wisma Putra.

Istana Melawati

Istana Melawati is the second national palace of Malaysia's Yang di-Pertuan Agong in Putrajaya after the Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur. It serves as a royal retreat for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The Melawati Palace is located in Precint 1, Putrajaya. Construction of the palace began in 1999 and was completed in 2002. It has a resort concept and serves as a retreat for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Melawati literally means guard’s tower.

Designed by Yang Mulia Raja Datuk Kamarul Bahrin, principal of Senibahri Arkitek architectural practice, the palace comprises four main components namely:

* Royal Wing - Private quarters
* Reception Wing - Ceremonial Reception Hall
* Banquet Wing - Functions
* Administrative Block - Offices

Three tall towers form a prominent structure at the side and centre of the palace. These towers represent old guard towers to be found in medieval Malay palaces. The 3 tiered roofs with intricate eaves details and clay 'buah butong' (appendages at the corners)provides an authentic attempt to replicate malay traditional roof designs of the east coast. Inside the palace at the main staircase of the Meeting Wing, is a Melawati which is made from cengal wood topped with golden roof.

Putrajaya International Convention Centre

Putrajaya International Convention Centre or PICC is the main convention centre in Putrajaya, Malaysia. This building is located on the top of Taman Puncak Selatan in Precinct 5.

It was constructed between 2000 and 2003 at a cost of RM600mil. Since October 2004, the Putrajaya Convention Centre is officially known as Putrajaya International Convention Centre or PICC to reflect the state of the art conference facilities at par with other international conference centre such as in London, Tokyo and Paris. The name change, which was perceived necessary as a marketing strategy and to internationalize Putrajaya, was first mooted by Dato Shafiq Abdullah, Deputy Under Secretary, Prime Minister's Department and endorsed by Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, former Prime Minister of Malaysia. Besides hosting the 10th Conference of Organization of Islamic Countries, PICC also became one of the most favoured conference venue for high security risk events, hosted by the government or private sector. PICC has had many important guests including foreign head of states and heads of government, important corporate personalities such as the world's richest man, Bill Gates. Due to its strategic location on the top of the hill in Putrajaya and facing beautiful lakes, it has also become one of most popular places and "hot" sites for film shootings especially for commercial advertisements. Despite these, the PICC is heavily under-utilised and it may take 300 years to recoup its original cost, excluding maintenance fees.

The design idea of this unique and impressive building is based on the shape of the eye of 'pending perak' (a silver Malay royal belt buckle). However, the structure of the roof was designed similar to a folded origami to alleviate the plain roundness of the structure. From the frontview, the building's eaves or wings are lifted at the sides, creating broad overhangings over the raking wall. Most of the walls are made of glass, so natural sunlight can easily illuminate the auditorium through the raked and shaded windows.

Putrajaya Wetlands

Putrajaya Wetlands in Putrajaya, Malaysia is believed to be the largest constructed freshwater wetlands in the tropics .It has a total area of 200 hactares (3.35 km²). Putrajaya Wetlands consists of 24 wetland cells, Wetlands Park (Taman Wetland) and the other Wetlands areas. The Wetland now is also a wildlife sanctuary which attracts a huge variety of animals to the combined terrestrial-aquatic wetland environment.

Several species of local marshland birds and water birds including the Little Egret, the Little Green Heron and Cinnamon Bittern, and migratory birds form Northern Hemisphere have been spotted there. Binoculars will come in handy for bird watching. The visitors can also enjoy a leisurely walk, jog or cycle along its bicycle track.

Putrajaya Landmark

The Putrajaya Landmark or Mercu Tanda is the first landmark in Putrajaya where the site of federal administrative centre was established here in 1995. It is located in Putra Perdana Park (which happens to be the highest point in Precinct 1 of Putrajaya, Malaysia). The Putrajaya Landmark symbolises the beginnings of Putrajaya with its time capsule structure. Its design is a combination of a high-technology theme and the use of contemporary and traditional motifs. Plaza Mercu or Landmark Plaza, is landscaped with trees and water fountains. The Perdana Mall are pedestrian walkways linking the Landmark and Entrance Plaza to Cascade Plaza, Fragrant Garden, gazebos and pergolas.

Perdana Leadership Foundation

Perdana Leadership Foundation was set up in 2003 with the aim of preserving, developing and disseminating materials by and on Malaysia's past Prime Ministers. Believing that past leadership can yield valuable insights for future development, the Foundation's objective is to increase awareness and appreciation of Malaysia's intellectual heritage.

The Foundation's broader obejctive is to promote global understanding by providing a channel for scholars and thinkers to undertake research and idea-sharing for lasting, peaceful resolutions. The Foundation operates a physical and electronic library, the Perdana Library which provides direct access to a wealth of information on Malaysia's past Prime Ministers. Seri Perdana

Seri Perdana is the official residence of the Prime Minister of Malaysia. It is located in Putrajaya, Malaysia. Construction began in 1997 and was completed in 1999. The building shares similar architecture with Perdana Putra. The first resident of this house was Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister. The current occupant of this house is the present Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Seri Perdana is the official residence of the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
It consists of 3 blocks :
* Main Reception Facilities/Protocol
* Banquet Facilities
* Residential Facilities

The Main Reception/Protocol and Banquet Facilities Blocks are used to welcome the government's official guests. The third block is the official residence of the Prime Minister and is a restricted area.

The Main Reception / Protocol

It is located at the front of Seri Perdana and is the highest area in the building with a pisturesque backdrop of Wetlands Putrajaya, a recreational area for tourists.

The Laman Tiba

The 'Laman Tiba' or arrival hall is located in front of the main entrance door of the main reception area facility block.

The Gallery (Arch)

This arch is an eye-catching feature in contemporary Malaysian architecture. The design of the'onion' shaped arch is inspired from the arches of the Mogul Muslim Era found at the Kuala Lumpur train station and Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur, a legacy of the colonial era. A major part of construction work used local raw materials. Marble from Langkawi was used for pillars, floors and walls; carpets and intricate woodcarvings used for doors and step panels. The total height of the Complex (from ground to peak of arch) is 28 meters.

Guest Room - Bilik Tamu

This comfortable lounge is the main rest area for official guests where the Prime Minister greets them. It can accommodate 25 to 55 guests. The elegant interiors of this block are designed with a combination of French and Malaysian tastes, creating a unique identity and outlook.

Special Guest Room - Bilik Tamu Khas

The Special Guest Room is used for closed discussions between the Prime Minister and Heads of Governments. Official photography sessions and gift exchanging ceremonies are also held here.

The Waiting Rooms - Bilik Menunggu

There are two waiting rooms for the VIPs. It is used by the wives or entourage of official guests before they are greeted by the Prime Minister.

Meeting Room - Bilik Mesyuarat

The meeting room can accommodate 30 persons. It contains video conferencing facilities, computers and advanced telecommunications systems.

Prayer Room - Surau

The prayer room can accommodate 200 people. Wood carving panels are used to separate prayer areas for men and women. The prayer hall is tastefully decorated with carvings and cornices with Islamic motifs similar to those found in mosques in the Middle East.

Dining Room - Bilik Jamuan

The dining room is used for official banquets. This area can accommodate 90 guests.

Gifts Gallery - Galeri Hadiah

This room is used to store gifts or souvenirs presented to the Prime Minister locally and internationally.

The Residence

The third block of the Seri Perdana Putrajaya is the official residence and the living quarters of the Prime Minister.

Banquet Hall

The majestic banquet hall is larger than the Dining Room and is the largest area in the Complex. The elegance of the architecture and interiors are inspired by French interior design.

The banquet hall consists of two floors and can accommodate 200 people. The interior of this hall is designed with a harmonious combination of French and Malay artwork. Apart from Malaysian flower motif carvings on the wooden walls, chandeliers and French window panes, there are also elements of European architecture at the pillars of this hall. The stage has a complete audio-visual system that can be used for speeches, prize giving ceremonies and cultural shows.

Palace of Justice

The Palace of Justice or Istana Kehakiman in Malay houses the Malaysian Court of Appeal and Federal Court, which moved to Putrajaya from the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur in the early 2000s.

The Palace of Justice's design incorporates influences of Islamic culture like Taj Mahal in India, Moorish culture, like the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur and Western culture, like Palladian.

There is a large central atrium around which the various rooms are arranged.

The Library is located on the Ground floor, with the hearing rooms of both the Federal and Appeal Courts located on the first floor. The Registries and offices of the Appeal and Federal Courts are on the second and third floors respectively, with the chambers of the Appeal and Federal Court Judges on the fourth and fifth floor.

Millennium Monument

The Millennium Monument is the first national monument to be built in Putrajaya. Its construction serves to celebrate the country's achievements. The monument is meant to be a way for the younger generation to learn about the country's history, the sacrifices and success stories of local leaders, inspiring them to strive for higher achievements in the future.

The monument, which stands in a 25-hectare park in Precinct 2, takes the shape of the Bunga Raya, and is 68m tall. The monument is constructed of solid metal and strengthened with metal structures.

During the day, the Millennium Monument glimmers gold as it reflects the sunlight. At night, the monument is lit up in vibrant pink. The view of the Millennium Monument coupled with the surrounding bridges makes the Putrajaya skyline an impressive sight.

As you walk up along the huge walkway of the Monument, you will be able to see the information that is engraved on the plates of the building. They provide a macro overview of the country's history starting from the Malacca Sultanate, the stories of local leaders who rised up to fight for the independence of the country, the technological advancement of the country in making cars, the transportation system of the country and other mega projects undertaken by the Government of Malaysia. The success stories of Malaysia embedded here are a reminder to the younger generation of the sacrifices that the leaders of the country have made.

Putra Square

The Putra Square (Malay: Dataran Putra) is a city square located opposite the Prime Minister's office complex, Perdana Putra, in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The square has been used for festivals such as the Malaysian Independence Day parade. The 300 meter circular Putra Square is bounded by Perdana Putra, Putra Mosque, Putra Bridge and the Promenade Shopping Mall.

Designed as two concentric plazas surrounded by Putra Perdana Park, the circular ceremonial area is an open hard landscape encircled by Charbaghs, which acts as a transition between the parks and the ceremonial area. Inside the Charbagh is an interplay of paths, water channels, flower beds and trees.

The Square is divided into 11 segments, in the pattern of an 11-pointed star. The outer 11-pointed star represents the 11 states of Malaya when the country gained independence in August 1957, the inner 13-pointed star the 13 states that formed Malaysia in 1963 and the 14-pointed star includes the new addition of the Federal Territory. The progressive arrangements of the different pointed stars finally culminate in a circle at the centre of the Square. The circle symbolises the ultimate goal of unity.

Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque

The Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque, or Iron Mosque (Malay: Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin or Masjid Besi) is the second principal mosque in Putrajaya, Malaysia after Putra Mosque. It is located in Putrajaya's Presint 3, next to Millennium Monument. Construction began since April 2004 and was fully completed on August 2009. It was officially opened on Friday at the eve of the month of Ramadhan 1430 Hijra.

The mosque was built to cater to approximately 24,000 residents including the government servants working around the city center as well as areas within Presint 2, 3, 4 and 18. Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque's area is twice that of Putra Mosque, which is located 2.2 kilometers north. The mosque was officially opened on 4 September 2009 by the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin. Its construction was done by Ahmad Zaki Resources Berhad (AZRB) a well known public listed Malay contractor which not only have projects in Malaysia but also in India and Saudi Arabia as well.

The "Iron Mosque" features a district cooling system, and without assembly of fans or an air conditioning system. The mosque employs "Architectural Wire Mesh" imported from Germany and China, which is also constructed at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, as well as the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. The main entrance is reinforced with Glass Reinforced Concrete to increase the integrity of the structure and uses fine glass to create an illusion of a white mosque from afar.

When completed, the path towards the mosque will cross a skyway known as the Kiblat Walk which stretches an area of 13,639 m². This skyway contains landscaping adapted from the ancient castles of Alhambra. The interior will be decorated with Al-Asmaul-Husna calligraphy of the Thuluth variation. The entrance to the main prayer hall will be adorned with verse 80 of Sura Al-Isra from the Qur'an.

This is also added with the Mihrab wall made of 13 meter-high glass panel imported from Germany inscribed with 2 verses from Sura Al-Baqarah on the right-hand side and Sura Ibrahim on the left. The mihrab wall is designed so that no light will be reflected, creating an illusion that the verses are floating on air. The 40-feet long edges of the mosque's roof are able to shelter the people praying outside of the main prayer hall from rain.

Putra Mosque

The Putra Mosque, or Masjid Putra in Malay language, is the principal mosque of Putrajaya, Malaysia. Construction of the mosque began in 1997 and was completed two years later. It is located next to Perdana Putra which houses the Malaysian Prime Minister's office and man-made Putrajaya Lake. In front of the mosque is a large square with flagpoles flying Malaysian states' flags.

Putra Mosque is named in honour of our former and first Prime Minister of Malaysia Almarhum Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al–Haj. It is one of the main⁄top symbol in Putrajaya which is located beside ‘Dataran Perdana’ and in front of ‘Putrajaya Lake’. The mosque was started to build in June 1997. It was ready and given to JAKIM on 1st of September 1999. It took 2 years to complete the building of the mosque.

The capacious of the mosque is 1.37 hectar. The start of the mosque area begins from the main door till the inside of the mosque. Meanwhile, ‘Dataran Putra’ and Souq is not in the area⁄surrounding of the mosque. The mosque was build by Y. Bhg. Dato′ Dr. Nik Mohammad Bin Mahmood of Senireka Sdn. Bhd. group which cost almost RM 250 million. The Maintenance cost was estimated RM 100 thousand. This mosque was build based on two concepts which are ‘Middle East’ and ‘Malay Tradition’.

Facing the scenic Putrajaya Lake, the Putra Mosque is arguably Putrajaya's most distinctive landmark and one of the most modern mosques in the world.

A showcase of how mosque designs have evolved in Malaysia, Putra Mosque's Islamic-architecture artistically blends traditional designs, local craftsmanship and the use of indigenous materials.

The mosque is modeled after Persian Islamic architecture of the Safavid period with elements derived from other Muslim cultures.
Putra Mosque

Incorporating Malaysian, Persian and Arab-Islamic architectural designs, the main entrance to the mosque is fashioned in the likeness of public building gates in Muslim Persia.

Its 116-metre minaret is influenced by the design of the Sheikh Omar mosque in Baghdad, while the basement wall of the mosque resembles that of the King Hassan mosque in Casablanca, Morocco.

The mosque is constructed in rose-tinted granite which gives its desert-pink hue that offsets the cengal woodwork on doors, windows and panels.

The Prayer Hall is simple and elegant and supported by 12 columns that prop up the 36-metre diameter main dome.
Putra Mosque

The mimbar (pulpit) and mehrab (niche that denotes the direction of Mecca) are adorned with khat or Islamic calligraphy.

A unique feature has been added to the sound system design - front throw speakers are used to create the effect of all sounds originating from the direction of the imam.

The mosque complex which can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers can be used to hold conferences, seminars and symposiums. Worshippers can also congregate at the sahna paved courtyard in front of the prayer hall.

The courtyard is landscape with features and can hold an additional 5,000 people.

Perdana Putra

The Perdana Putra is a building complex in Putrajaya which houses the Malaysian Prime Minister office complex. Located on the main hill in Putrajaya, it has become synonymous with the Malaysian executive arm.

Construction began in 1997 and was completed in early 1999. The building was first occupied in April 1999 after all sections of the Prime Minister Department moved from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya.

The structural design is influenced by Malay, Islamic and European cultures as such Palladian and Neoclassicism.[citation needed] It was designed by a Qidean Architect (Ahmad Rozi Abd Wahab being the principal architect) with an inspiration from the former prime minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad.

GET IN

By plane

The nearest airport is Kuala Lumpur International Airport. A coupon or metered budget taxi to or from KLIA will take 30 minutes and cost around RM60. Alternatively, you can take the KLIA Transit from the airport to Putrajaya station and transfer to a taxi.

By train

For public transport the fastest choice is the KLIA Transit connecting Kuala Lumpur's Sentral train station to its airport, which stops halfway in between at Putrajaya. Trains run every 30 minutes, take 20 minutes and the list price is RM 9.50 one-way. Putrajaya tour return tickets are no longer available.

Note: KLIA Ekspres services do not stop at Putrajaya.

By taxi

Coupon taxis from Kuala Lumpur's KL Sentral cost a fixed RM35, but otherwise you'll have to try out your bargaining skills - figure on RM30-50, and expect to pay more at night.

By bus

Bus service is provided from 6:30AM until 10PM to and from Cyberjaya, Putrajaya, Serdang commuter station, Sinar Kota and Pasar Seni LRT station in Kuala Lumpur. The bus fare for one-way is around RM 3.50 and takes about 30 minutes-one hour, depends on the traffic flow. Usually, on non-working days the time the buses take to arrive at Putrajaya will be much faster, but the frequency of the buses will be accordingly reduced.

The new Express network by Rapid KL links KL Sentral to Putrajaya with only RM 5 for an unlimited daily pass.

All public buses from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya drop and pick up passengers from the bus terminal beside the train station (Putrajaya Sentral), which is at least 5 km from the core district.

Shuttle buses to/from KL are provided by some hotels for guests, such as Shangri-la.

GET AROUND

Public transportation within Putrajaya is woefully inadequate, as distances are long and you need wheels to get around. Occasional Nadiputra buses [4] putter about from the train station at random times in random directions. These buses charge a flat fare of 50 sen. Your best bet is probably to enquire at KLIA or KL Sentral about organized tours. There are also public two-hour tours at 11 AM and 2 PM, departing from the tour desk at Selera Putra, that charge only a token RM 1 for the bus.

By taxi

Coupon taxis from the Transit station charge RM8-10 to most points in Putrajaya. Other taxis are limited and it's best to book by phone at +60-3-5512-2266. Other taxi hotlines include: Putrajaya Cyberjaya Radio Taxi at +60 03 8888 4000, which operates 24hours. The meter starts ticking from RM4, but many cabbies are reluctant to use theirs. Chartering starts from RM30/hour, negotiable downwards.

By monorail

Construction of the Putrajaya Monorail has been halted until the occupancy of the Core District becomes higher.

Putrajaya - Intelligent Garden City

Putrajaya, an "Intelligent Garden City" and the federal administrative capital of Malaysia, is a showcase city under construction some 30 km south of the capital Kuala Lumpur. Her adjacent sister city, Cyberjaya, is built along the same lines, but is aimed at attracting the IT industry. The area was formerly known as Prang Besar.

Putrajaya covers a vast sprawl of 4,931 hectares, which were mostly palm plantations before the federal government purchased the lot from the surrounding state of Selangor. The city's masterplan is designed along an axial tangent which runs from the northeast to southeast, with gently undulating terrain. About 40% of Putrajaya is natural, but the landscape has been extensively reworked by man: lush greenery and botanical gardens are spread across the landscape, crisscrossed by large bodies of water and wetlands. Five confluences meet at the north forming a main waterway, the Putrajaya Lake, which flows across the city area.

The project was started in 1993 and the federal capital officially moved in 1999, although the site is still far from complete. Putrajaya became a self-governing federal territory (wilayah persekutuan) in 2001, the third in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur and the little oddball island of Labuan.

The name literally means "princes' (putra) success (jaya)". Officially, the site is named in homage to Malaysia's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, but odds are it's also a tip of the hat towards the "princes of the soil" (bumiputra), an euphemism for ethnic Malays (as opposed to the richer Chinese minority) and one of the key concepts of Malaysia's affirmative action program.

Ever since the Asian economic crisis of 1998 development has slowed down markedly, and while there aren't any of the rusting half-built concrete shells that still litter KL and Bangkok, the careful eye will spot more than a couple of once cleared and dug-up but now abandoned fields (often with a crane or two stuck in the mud too). Basically, the infrastructure is largely in place but the buildings and occupants aren't, leading to the impression of a giant swath of hilly jungle crisscrossed by 8-lane highways with no other cars on them, and the occasional beautifully sculpted lake garden with no people in sight.

That said, the area remains under heavy construction and both people and companies are slowly moving in. As of 2009, the population has surpassed 50,000, although there's still a long way to go to the targeted 300,000. Inevitably, development isn't always occurring in expected ways: Cyberjaya has to date mostly succeeded in attracting call centers and data warehouses, not R&D laboratories. The new twin cities may look very different in 5-10 years' time.
